Adult Television - and No, That's Not It

As mothers, I know we all get our fair share of Teletubbies, Blue's Clues, Clifford, etc. In fact, Toddler-Man is currently obsessed with Diego. "Watch Diego!" "No eat dinner, want watch Diego!" I thought he liked Teletubbies before, but it is nothing compared to his obsession with Diego. It ends, and he cries. "No! More Diego!" Fortunately, he thinks Dora and Diego are pretty much the same thing, so I at least have two shows that are acceptable to him. Blue's Clues will do in a pinch, and I'm waiting for that obsession to begin, but for now, Diego is the clear winner. Anyway..... I am not as righteous as Heather, and TV has not been banned from our house. I like TV. I like reading more, but I still like TV. I like zoning out, I like really good writing and good acting, and I pretty much hate reality TV. (Although I do have to admit, I have been known to watch "The Apprentice" on occasion, but I'm not overly excited about it). Why don't people just admit that it's for entertainment and ratings, and people desperate for their fifteen minutes of fame are cheaper than actors? So, these are the shows that I currently watch, and enjoy. I would like to know what television shows you feel are worthy of taking up your precious time, because we all know that time when the children are asleep is precious, and if I'm using it to watch TV, then it better be good. I used the word precious too many times there. Sorry. Monday - Medium - I totally love this show. I'm not into crime shows, but this psychic mother of three fascinates me. Tuesday - Gilmore Girls! Love this show, just recently got into it, so I also currently tape the re-runs that come on at 3 p.m. on cable. So I'm playing catch up on this one, but the witty banter on this show, and the people in that town just crack me up. I recently saw a rerun where the band rewrote lyrics to "A Mighty Fortress is Our God" in order to update it, and I laughed so hard I cried. Tuesday cont'd. - Scrubs. I typically don't like medical shows either, but this show is pretty funny. Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday - nothing. Zip. Zilch. Nada. So sad, (well, maybe sad isn't the right word) but there's just not a lot there. Oh, if I find a "Deal or No Deal" then we watch that, but it doesn't really count because my kids watch it with us, and shout "Deal!" at the TV, and it's more of a family activity than Mommy escapism. Sunday - Here I will admit to my guilty pleasure - Desperate Housewives. I think the plotlines are great, it's campy, funny, intriguing, and soap oper-y all at the same time, and at times it's so very sweet, while other times it's so very un-sweet. The combination works for me. So there you go, my big time wasters. Not a lot of them, but a few hours a week, I am zoning. I know a lot of people have tried to get me into "24", but I watched DH obsess horribly over the first season, and then he had to quit 'cold turkey' because of the addiction factor, and I decided I couldn't go there. So, if you'll excuse me, I have to set my DVR, because "Gilmore Girls" isn't set to record yet.

I am feeling a lack of good tv indulgences in my life right now. I too watch Desp. Housewives from time to time. I like Grey's Anatomy fairly well. Other than that? Alias has wimped out (sob) and Law and Order reruns with hubby.

I like CIS New York, and With out A Trace, sometimes, I'm still careful with those but I like them on the odd occasion. We also like Ghost Wisperer. I don't like comedy, they are tooooo yucky for me. I guess I just don't like the humor.

I'm a Gilmore Girls fan, too and my neighbor comes over every week to watch it with me. Ubercyl got me addicted to Monk. It's on USA and cracks me up (plus it takes place in SF which I can see out my window, a fun perk). I also recently got into House on Fox which even my hubby, a med student, enjoys (he finds ER ridiculus). We also watch Project Runway which is now over.

Our house is a "24" house- and the nervous tension is a killer. I almost can't watch sometimes because of the suspense.

We like "My Name is Earl" and "The Office" on Thursday nights. Earl is endearing and pretty funny, former mess-up trying to do good. And The Office- well, I don't know how the actors manage to do it some weeks- I sit on the couch squirming. Steve Carrell is some kind of genius. Definately creative, though.

Other than that, we hit the Law & Order reruns too. And Star Trek TNG- but you already know that. I heart Patrick Stewart!

The Office is probably my favorite thing on tv right now.

I've recently really gotten into a truly horrible tv show. You know, so awesomely bad that it's terrific? Criminal Minds. Most of the cop shows are bad, but this one blows them away. Great stuff. We have Tivo, so we can pause it and predict what cheesy, stupid thing will happen next. Or just to laugh at the horrible writing.

Not all reality tv is bad. My favorites are the ones where they're following people around in their daily lives, like American Chopper. There's also a new show by the makers of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (the best show on tv, period), called Miracle Workers, that's interesting. They gave a man who'd been blind for 22 years his sight back.

Since you missed Arrested Development, go rent it on DVD.

Will no one else confess to watching American Idol? Okay, I will. I watch American Idol.

And I like Grey's Anatomy, but after unwittingly watching the perpetual-orgasm episode with my mother last month, my enthusiasm has cooled a bit. That was embarrassing.

Even more embarrassing than admitting I watch Idol.

My Name is Earl is one of the funniest shows on tv right now. The "white trash" element is just too hysterical and Jamie Presley is fantastic. Scrubs is the other comedy worth watching. Not your typical medical show. Laugh-out-loud funny.

When it comes to reality tv, I really do enjoy it. But there is so much out there right now, you have to be picky. #1 - Project Runway on Bravo. It just ended this week, but when the new season comes out, watch it. I promise you will love it. The creative process of the fashion designers is really fun to watch. #2 Nashville Star - If you like country music at all, this is the show for you. It's like American Idol, but the contestants can do more than sing good. They play instruments and write their own music. The talent is amazing. I think the new season actually starts this week. THe only downside is that this year it is hosted by Wynnona Judd (she scares me). #3 American Idol - I'm right there with you Ana. I like to see real talent on tv - which has meant to skip the girls night for the past few weeks. It's all about the guys this year. And if you want some real eye candy, check out Ace. My knees get a little weak when I watch him sing.

Ana and Carrie, I'm right there with you. I LOVE American Idol. We don't have TV but luckily my VT'er tapes it every week and has let us borrow the tape the last 2 weeks! I love Chris Daughtry! and by the way, the girls were pretty good this week...Kelly and Mandisa did awesome!

Banning TV from your house makes as much sense as banning books. There's good TV and bad TV. There, I said it.

I love Arrested Development and I will hate FOX forever for killing it. Now that it's gone, I have to content myself with Survivor and the Amazing Race.

More than TV shows, I love catching cleaned-up-for-cable rated R movies. Call me naughty. If I can catch "Shawshank," "Blues Brothers" or "Say Anything," I'm a happy, happy girl. I'm also getting into the James Bond movies on AMC, which scares me to death. Why do I like them so much? WHY?

We seem to have one show a night, besides the weekends, which seem to be no-tv nights for us. Anyway, our shows are 24, Scrubs, LOST, and The Office. A good mix of serious and comedy! Seriously, the music/dance sequences on Scrubs are my favorite and the Office is so hilarious - the boss has way too many things in common with one of my former employers!!

BTW, my daughter hasn't really watched tv. We have one Einstein baby video and it kind of freaked me out how entranced she became the first time she watched it, so we do other things durign the day. I imagine when baby #2 comes in June, it will be a different story!

Our list of shows:
West Wing; 24, Lost (reminds me of x-files), and Battlestar Gallactica which is on sci-fi, and is a redux of the earlier version (did you know there is a lot of LDS inspired cosmology in this show?)
The thing is, if I wasn't married to my husband I probably wouldn't watch any of these--they're really more his shows than mine. My one thing I do keep up with is ER-it's like watching a train wreck--I wish it would just get cancelled.
We tape everything and watch them after little people are fast asleep, and don't have to deal with commercials, which gets me to reading time faster. In the summers we go through a ton of movies on netflix.

Naddin J, as someone who doesn't have tv I want to defend my position. We don't have tv BANNED. First and foremost, we don't want to pay for it. Secondly, my husband and I have the type of personalities where we can just sit in front of the tv forever and get absolutely nothing done. We don't have tv so that we can do much more productive things in life--like reading blogs! LOL Seriously though, we just made the decision that we didn't need it in our home.

I'm a TV junkie. There, I'll admit it. If I could afford it, I'd give Tivo to all my friends when they have kids. Not to use for the kids (though that's helpful as well) but so that they never have to miss their favorite shows when dealing with feedings and dirty diapers and exhaustion.

That said. My favorites are: Gilmore Girls, Grey's Anatomy, Lost, Project Runway, Alias, American Idol. I used to watch Desperate Housewives, but I stopped this season, it wasn't able to compete with everything else I liked to watch! I also watch things that most of you probably wouldn't, like Six Feet Under, which was an amazing show but certainly not PG rated.

Here's my list. Now granted, we have DirecTV and our tivo gives us the pleasure of watching whenever we have extra time. That's why the list is so long:

Gilmore Girls
Amazing Race
The Apprentice (getting worse every season)
The Office
Law and Order
Law and Order Criminal Intent
Crossing Jordan
AMERICAN IDOL!!!! (5 years now!)
Extreme Makeover: Home Edition
CSI:New York
CSI:Miami (if we're bored)
Star Trek (any one of them) re-runs
And I was SOOO depressed when Everybody Loves Raymond went off the air.

Lots of TV, yes, but DH and I share the same tastes in all the TV and movies we watch and the plethora of books we read. (Don't tell anyone, but he loves Gilmore Girls, too!)It brings us closer...(and saves our sanity at the end of the day!)

Alright, my DH and I are addicted to:
24 (our first season watching...how wimpy can that prez be, starting to get on my nerves)
LOST (if we had to give it all up, only this one would stand. DVR is really fun with this one to catch things like the DHARMA sign on the shark's tale last season)
CSI (Only the original will do)
How I Met Your Mother(though Barney is pretty crass, he seems to purely represent that evil side of us all)

Now for the non-primtime. You MUST watch the half hour BBC version of What Not To Wear. Those ladies, the way they talk about bras and knickers, cannot be missed. They are awesome when they appear on Oprah too.

Dirty Jobs is one of my faves. I have seen a man go exterminating, crocodile and turkey farming, chicken-sexing and sorting etc. It is so great.

Adoption Stories makes me cry more than Baby Story

30 minute meals is another fave.

I love the Office and "Earl". Anything on the Food Network.

There aren't many LOST fans here, either, or Grey's Anatomy. Both good.

I am obsessed w/ Project Runway and Law and Order (Tracy...I swear we are twins...my "present" for my 21st birthday was a life size cardboard cutout of Jean Luc Picard. I STILL HAVE IT).

The new Bravo kitchen show looks good to.

Let me just defend my position, too.

We have also not BANNED TV, we just don't have it hooked up into our home, so we have nothing. Jacob watches tons of videos, we have family movie night, and he watches plenty when we go over to Grandma's house (and to The Wiz's house, for that matter!). We just got in the habit of not watching TV when we were students and didn't want to pay that extra $30.00 for cable. Then we moved, and didn't bother to hook up cable for about 2 weeks. DH said, "Hey, let's try living without it for a while", and it turned out we liked it. So we've continued with it. One less battle to have to fight, is the way we see it. Also, we are both surprised how little we miss it. Ok, I will admit that I do totally miss Buffy, but that's about it.

Three years ago I made a new year's resolution to watch more TV. It was hard because I wasn't interested in most of the stuff that was on, and things that looked good had ongoing storylines which required watching from the beginning. We got a DVR and I finally succeeded in my goal this year and I love it. And I am not ashamed. I watch:

Veronica Mars
The Office

I also like the BBC version of What Not to Wear, but I only watch that occasionally. I missed the first few episodes of American Idol this season, but may pick it up if I remember to record it.

I don't intentionally restrict TV time for my kids, either, but since they are in school or doing other things most of the day, they also rarely watch anything. They watch Sponge Bob or old Superfriends episodes occasionally, and we do record Avatar for them, which my husband watches with them when they're all home and toddler boy is napping.

We love TV too, my husband has to have it on all the time. He's one of those people that requires constant background noise. Hopefully I can wean him of it before our son gets too old (he's only 4 months now). We love
LOST, House, Bones, Mythbusters, and Numbers. Haven't gotten into 24. My husband LOVES the Simpsons and as a result it has grown on me but I could also live without it. I do have to confess that I love Survivor. It is Rupert's fault.
